Best Betting Sites in Africa
You can tell whether a betting site’s built for Africa or just available here by checking how you deposit. If M-Pesa or OPay’s on the cashier page, they’re built for here. If it’s only Visa and bank transfer in USD, it’s an international site that happens to accept African players.
We’ve reviewed 12 operators across the four biggest African betting markets. The short version: 1xBet leads on raw product quality across the continent, SportyBet and Betway are the strongest pan-African alternatives, and the country leaders (Bet9ja in Nigeria, Betika in Kenya) are still the right answer if you’re betting locally.

Top 3 Pan-African Operators
If you want one operator that works across multiple African countries, these three lead. All three hold local licences in each market they operate in, native mobile money support, and apps built for African connection speeds.
| Rank | Operator | Score | Markets | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1xBet | 4.0/5 | Continental reach | Sharpest odds, deepest market range |
| 2 | SportyBet | 3.9/5 | 6 countries | Mobile experience + free SportyTV streaming |
| 3 | Betway | 3.9/5 | 8 countries | Data-free betting, no withdrawal fees |
1xBet wins on the betting fundamentals: football margins of 1.2-2.5% (versus 5-6% industry average) and 2,700+ markets per top match. Trade-off: aggressive KYC before your first withdrawal and an interface that overwhelms beginners.
SportyBet runs in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, and South Africa with local licences in each. The app is the fastest in the Nigerian market, withdrawals process in 5-30 minutes, and SportyTV gives you free EPL, La Liga, and Serie A streaming integrated with live betting. Nobody else in Africa does that.
Betway covers Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, and Malawi. The standout is data-free betting: on supported networks you can bet without using your data bundle. Backed by NYSE-listed Super Group. Odds aren’t market-leading but the convenience is.
Best Betting Sites by Country
The country leaders rank differently from the pan-African list because local licensing, payment integration, and league coverage matter more than continental scale once you’re betting from one place.
Nigeria
Nigeria has the deepest betting market on the continent and the most competitive top tier. Six operators score 3.9 or above in our reviews. Here’s the top 3.
| Rank | Operator | Score | Standout |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bet9ja | 3.9/5 | NPFL depth, brand trust, the default Nigerian sportsbook |
| 2 | SportyBet | 3.9/5 | Fastest app + free SportyTV live streaming |
| 3 | BetKing | 3.9/5 | Sub-10-minute GTBank withdrawals + 14-day free bet programme |
Bet9ja remains the default choice — biggest brand, deepest NPFL coverage, and a 100% match welcome bonus up to ₦100,000. SportyBet and BetKing are the strongest alternatives, with BetKing leading on withdrawal speed and SportyBet on mobile experience. All three are licensed under the new FSGRN framework. The Federation of State Gaming Regulators of Nigeria signed its Universal Reciprocity Certificate in May 2025, replacing the NLRC’s federal authority after the November 2024 Supreme Court ruling that limited NLRC jurisdiction to the Federal Capital Territory.
Honourable mentions for 22Bet (3.9/5, tightest EPL odds) and 1xBet (4.0/5, deepest markets but more friction). Mobile-first punters should also see our BangBet review. Full breakdown of every Nigerian operator with bonus data and odds testing in our Nigeria guide.
Kenya
Kenya’s market is more concentrated. Three operators dominate, all M-Pesa-native, all licensed by the BCLB. The board is itself transitioning to the new Gambling Regulatory Authority under the Gambling Control Act 2025, targeted for end of February 2026.
| Rank | Operator | Score | Standout |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Betika | 3.7/5 | Kenya market leader, mobile-first, KES 10 minimum |
| 2 | Mozzart Bet | 3.6/5 | Best football odds in Kenya (~93% payout) |
| 3 | OdiBet | 3.4/5 | Lightest app (~2.4 MB), KES 1 minimum bet |
Betika is the default for most Kenyan punters: deepest market, native M-Pesa integration via Paybill 290290, and a slick mobile experience. Mozzart Bet edges Betika on football odds by about a percentage point — worth opening as a second account if you bet European football regularly. OdiBet is the budget pick: tiny app, low minimums, fast withdrawals, but odds margins around 5% trail Betika’s ~3.8%.
One thing to know: Kenya’s Finance Act 2025 introduced a 5% excise duty on every deposit and a 5% withholding tax on every withdrawal, effective July 2025. That replaced the old 20% tax on net winnings. A round-trip deposit-and-withdraw cycle now costs roughly 10% in combined tax. South Africa
Hollywoodbets owns South Africa. The standout feature is data-free browsing on supported networks — you can browse, bet, and manage your account without it touching your mobile data bundle. In a market where data costs eat into margins, that’s not a gimmick. Betway SA is the strongest alternative, with a 100% matched deposit up to R1,000 for new sign-ups.
South Africa’s provincial licensing system means your bookmaker holds a licence from one of nine provincial boards but can legally accept your online bets regardless of where in the country you are. Full breakdown coming as we publish South African operator reviews — for now, our South Africa guide covers the market structure and what to look for.
Ghana
Betway, 1xBet, and SportyBet all hold local licences from Ghana’s Gaming Commission. Here’s what makes Ghana stand out: the government abolished its 10% withholding tax on betting winnings in April 2025, making it the only major African market where your winnings aren’t taxed at all. MTN Mobile Money is the standard deposit method.

Best for Specific Needs
The overall ranking and country lists answer “which operator should I open an account with.” These three lists answer “which operator is best at X.” Each one is based on the relevant category score from our reviews — no opinion-padding.
Fastest Payouts
If withdrawal speed is what you care about, four operators score 4.5 out of 5 on payments and withdrawals in our testing.
– SportyBet — Most bank transfers land in 5-30 minutes. Minimum withdrawal ₦1. Zero fees from SportyBet’s side.
– BetKing — Sub-10-minute GTBank withdrawals, fastest documented in the Nigerian market.
– Betway — OPay withdrawals in 15 minutes to 2 hours. No withdrawal fees from Betway. Bank transfers handle up to ₦25 million.
– 22Bet — OPay/Paga/Moniepoint under 30 minutes once KYC is cleared. Bank transfer under 2 hours.
Best Mobile Apps
Four operators score 4.5/5 on mobile experience, each for different reasons.
– SportyBet — Fastest app in the Nigerian market plus M-Lite (~6 MB) for low-end devices and SportyTV free live streaming integrated with live betting.
– Betway — Data-free mode lets you bet without using your data bundle on supported networks. ~7 MB app, available on Google Play.
– Betika — Kenya market leader on app polish. Native M-Pesa integration, fast load times even on patchy 3G.
– OdiBet — Lightest betting app in Kenya at ~2.4 MB. SMS and USSD fallback if data runs out. Built for budget Android phones.

Sharpest Odds
Five operators score 4.0 or higher on odds quality. Worth opening one of these as a second account if you bet regularly — the margin difference compounds.
– 1xBet — Football margins of 1.2-2.5%, the sharpest of any African-licensed bookmaker. ~97.5-98.8% payout vs. the 94-95% you’ll find on most Nigerian operators.
– Bet365 — 4-5% margins on major football, 95-96% payout overall. World-class but Nigerian access is USD-only with no mobile money.
– 22Bet — EPL odds measurably tighter than Bet9ja or SportyBet. Strongest on European football specifically.
– Mozzart Bet — ~93% football payout in Kenya, edging Betika by about a percentage point.
– Melbet — 3.4% EPL margin. Strong on European football, weaker on local Nigerian league depth.
What Actually Matters When Choosing
Three things matter most beyond the headline ranking: payment integration with how you actually move money, a mobile app that works on your network, and withdrawal speed in your specific country. Our reviews score every operator across seven weighted categories — sports and markets, payments, odds, bonuses, mobile, support, and licensing — to produce the overall scores you see above. Full methodology in how we review betting sites.
Payments and Tax
Deposit methods, fees, and tax rates differ significantly by country. M-Pesa dominates Kenya (Paybill 290290 for Betika, 290059 for Mozzart), OPay and bank transfer lead in Nigeria, EFT and Ozow in South Africa, MTN Mobile Money in Ghana. Tax treatment varies just as widely: 0% in Ghana, 5% on Kenyan deposits and 5% on Kenyan withdrawals, and a 5% Lagos withholding tax on Nigerian winnings (alongside the federal Nigerian Tax Act 2025 that took effect 1 January 2026).
We’re building a full payment methods hub covering deposits, withdrawals, fees, and processing times across every method by country — coming soon. In the meantime, our deposit guide walks through M-Pesa, OPay, EFT and MTN Mobile Money setup country by country.
All scores reflect our weighted review methodology covering sports & markets (20%), payments (20%), odds quality (15%), bonuses (15%), mobile experience (15%), customer support (10%), and licensing & trust (5%). Scores updated as we re-test operators or as platforms change.
